Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend a career event in University of Melbourne by Travis May from LinkedIn. He gave us several tips and tricks on how to make your LinkedIn profile stands out from all the other applicants. So without further ado, let's get to it!

Add your industry

Many professionals (yes, that includes recruiters as well!) search for candidates by industry, so make sure that you add your preferred industry in your profile.

Draft a compelling summary

Your profile summary is a short summary of yourself regarding who you are and what you are looking for. Your profile summary is one of the most important aspects as it is the first thing that people will look at when they see your profile. Your summary should be short and sweet.

Tips : It is always better to start drafting a simple summary on your profile and update it from time to time rather than leaving it blank.

Add your past work and volunteer experience.

Of course it is important to list down all your work history. It does not matter whether it is related to the field or not as they are still able to showcase the skills that you possessed. However, there are many instances where students are still new to the workforce and they have no past experience. In this case, it would be good to list down all the volunteer experiences and extra curricular activities that you had done.

Skills

Your skills are what differentiates you from other applicants. They are what you want to be known of. It would be good to refine down the skills that you want to focus on and what makes you unique.

Request for recommendations

Do not be afraid to ask for recommendations and skill endorsements.

Share updates and publishing

People who often share updates and publish articles are proven to have more profile views and get more connection requests. It is understandable that not everyone is comfortable publishing an article due to various reasons. However, it is important to start trying now then never. You could probably start from doing simple updates such as sharing an article.

Best practices for sharing updates :

1. Share your personal thoughts and opinions.

2. Be active! Post frequently from time to time like how you do on your Facebook and Instagram.

3. Include rich media to increase engagement.

4. Create opportunity for reciprocity!

Best practices for publishing content :

1. Create a catchy headline to grab attention.

2. Include photos / galleries to stand out.

3. Be original! Share your own personal views and thoughts.

4. Place yourself in the shoes of the reader.

5. Be considerate of your article length. Readers tend to drive away from lengthy articles!

Tips: You can use post and blogging to track your progress.

Follow companies and influencers

By following companies and influencers, others are able to tell what you are interested in.

Your network is your asset

Connect with people. Tell others what you want and what you need to get there. Even if you cannot decide what you want right now, just choose something and you can change it later, just start by what interest you the most. Just like what say Reid Hoffman (founder of LinkedIn) said "The fastest way to change yourself is to hang out with people who are already the way you want to be."
